Big Screen Tenure and Installation | Charlton Athletic
When of the biggest project I have undertaken whilst at Charlton Athletic was the purchasing of a brand new big screen and a multi-camera replay system to go with it.
After the club’s old screen had seen better days we needed to purchase a new screen which would be energy efficient and crystal clear in picture quality. After lots of negotiation, we opted to work with ADI who provided us with one of the most technologically advanced screens on the market.
Unlike traditional screens the big screen at Charlton Athletic uses four LED bulbs to create one pixel. Each pixel contains one red LED, one blue LED and two green LED bulbs. Our screen is used in a sporting environment where the most common background colour will be green grass and therefore the screen will display the colour green a lot more than any other colour throughout its lifetime. By having two green LED’s the bulbs can run on half power, creating an overall longer life for the screen panels.
The screen has been divided into two at The Valley allowing a near 1080HD 16×9 ratio video area at the top, and an animated advertising bar at the bottom, giving brands full in-game exposure.
MULTI-CAMERA REPLAY SYSTEM
One of the proudest things in my life is the multi-camera replay system which I designed at The Valley. The camera system contains wall boxes all around the ground allowing for live camera feeds to be taken into the system from a variety of points inside the stadium.
The camera system contains a Tricaster Vision Mixer and a 3Play replay machine. As well as importantly being within budget and in time, the system has advanced to more than we originally expected.
The system allows on first team matchdays for live cameras to be displayed on the big screen, as well as replays, VT’s and graphics.
For youth games the system allows live-multi camera streaming onto social media sites including Facebook and YouTube, allowing fans to get closer to the action even when they can’t make the game. Below is an example of a game which has been streamed.
Below is a case study which Charlton Athletic conducted in partnership with NewTek.
